Paul Taylor will give a talk on his underground filming techniques.
Sounds like an evening not to be missed.

A resume from Paul …

The presentation at the GSS Social on the 28th April is planned to give people an incite into the world of video editing.

I do not pro-port to be an expert as to be honest I am almost completely self taught apart from some initial help from Nicky Bayley who it has to be said started me off.
Going back to 2005 I commissioned Nicky to make a film that we could use as the opening of the 2005 Forest Caving Symposium. Nicky was already an accomplished film maker and I liked her work. I wrote the script and screenplay and she filmed it and edited it.

This set my mind wondering if I could do something similar and a couple of years later Rose and myself were down to go on a cruise. Albeit not your normal 2500 passengers this was to be on 12 so very small and very special. I decided that I would buy a video camera and record it. Which I did and i then set about editing it.

I invited Nicky to a viewing and although she liked it she said “You can do a lot better”. I had vowed that the camera would not go caving but of course it did and it was not long before I found that I was producing some quite good results (In my opinion) then in 2009 Dave Parker announced that he wanted to visit Otter Hole. With Nicky running a second camera we recorded this event and this led to the production of the Otter Hole Film 40 years on.

This project showed me that Otter Hole had many more things to offer and set the ball in motion for a project that has currently been running for 3 years and involving many people to produce another film about the cave.
Equipment has changed and the advent of Digital Recording and GoPro cameras has had a vast impact on what can be achieved.

Over the years a number of people have asked how is it all done.
This is the opportunity to find out.

Currently I run four screens at home on which I carry out the video editing. How did I manage on just one I just don’t know.
The plan is to run four video projectors to simulate how I work at home and then add to this a Green Screen so that we can get those who attend involved with filming and editing.

Over the last few years I have had some great fun filming and producing the end results which I hope people have enjoyed.

Many probably don’t realise how much work goes into this so come along to the social and you can not only see what is involved but also have the opportunity to get involved.
So if all goes to plan we should have Four screens running the presentation along with the Green Screen and a lot of equipment for people to see.

Hopefully you may also go away with the thoughts of having a go yourself.
